What can you learn by looking at the letter X?

 

When you look at the letter X, you see two pairs of VERTICAL ANGLES, or angles opposite each other when two lines cross.

Vertical Angles in Depth

 

 

Vertical angles are CONGRUENT. That means they are the same size.

In the X above, angle 1 is congruent to angle 3, and angle 2 is congruent to angle 4. That means if the measure of angle 1 is 95º, then the measure of angle 3 is also 95º.

Angle 1 = Angle 3

&

Angle 2 = Angle 4
Vertical angles share the same VERTEX, or the point where two lines INTERSECT, or meet.

 

 
Angles that are not vertical in the X are SUPPLEMENTARY angles, or angles with measurements that add up to 180º.
